Hi all

The original Sylva stuff is getting old and will eventually need replacing (largely related to the bank account balance...). Has anyone tried the new tacktick wireless instruments ? They seem easy to install but will the technology stand the test of time ?

Not sure I want to replace the existing Silva with Nx2. I am not much of a fan of Silva. However, original Silva tranducers are smaller than current other makers tranducers, hence some foreseable problems in changing..

I have looked at Raymarine but would need to enlarge significantly the housing holes.. not sure I want to do that either.

Any good replacement experience out there ?

Three years ago I decided to go with the B&G H1000 series. I have been very pleased with them. wind, speed, depth and much more. NEMA interfaces too. I really like the 3 function display for the mast. Of course these are a wired set vs. the tacktick wireless. Good luck.

Was it complicated to change the tranducers since the holes are not of the same size ?

I have a friend who bought a ticktack instrument system last year. This year he went to use it and it had, to best of my memory, some sort of a memory battery that had gone bad, apparently on the board. The bottom line was ticktack would not stand behind it and they would not tell him what battery he needed or how to fix it. They apparently wanted him to buy a new component. Need I say more.

B&G seem to have the best reputation out there but expensive... Anyone using Nx2 from Silva ?

The through hull holes for the transducer are not too difficult to work with. I had to drill one new hole and also had to remove and replace the other.

Once the holes are open and exposed, I used the West System 2 part epoxy with some filler (I forget the number but it is a white powder that will make the epoxy thick so it won't run). Mix to appropriate thickness.

Next, I lubed up the through hull fittings with tons of vaseline. I then filled the small gaps between the hull and fitting with the epoxy mix. This made for a tight fit and seals the core from moisture. Because of the vaseline I was then able to tap out the through hull fitting and use 4200 or 4000 caulk to seal it in place.

B&G is expensive, but I have been happy. The wiring is fairly friendly too.

I have a friend who has the Nx2 system. Seems to like that a great deal too.

I installed a Raymarine set of wind speed and depth insturments this summer. The thru hulls were work to get the old ones out but the holes were molded with and once the old ones were out it was pretty easy to install the new sensors. The instruments were very easy to install and wire as they come with color coded wires. They all hook up together and are easy to read and work fine for me.
